New Westminster Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 143 Years of Supporting Local Business
New Westminster, B.C. — The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce proudly marks another milestone: the 143rd anniversary of its incorporation on January 17, 1883, making the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce one of the longest standing business associations in British Columbia.
Originally founded under the name The New Westminster Board of Trade, the organization has spent well over a century dedicated to supporting, connecting, and championing local businesses of all sizes from startups and small enterprises to established industry leaders.
A Chamber Rooted in History
As British Columbia’s oldest city and its original capital, New Westminster earned the nickname “The Royal City” when Queen Victoria herself selected the name in 1859. Its strategic location on the Fraser River quickly turned it into a commercial and transportation hub, a role it continues to embrace today. Historic neighbourhoods, vibrant cultural districts, and a strong small business community have shaped New Westminster into a dynamic urban centre that blends heritage with modern culture.
“For 143 years, the Chamber has been a cornerstone of New Westminster’s economic life,” said Karima Jivraj, Chair of the Board of Directors. “Our history is rooted in economic trade, advocacy, and a belief that when local businesses thrive, our entire community thrives something that has been true since the earliest days of New Westminster.”
A Legacy of Service, Resilience, and Community Building
Since its earliest recorded activities in the late 19th century, the New Westminster Chamber has continually adapted to the evolving needs of a changing economy. But one of the most defining moments in its history occurred just after the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Chamber faced the very real possibility of dissolution. Through the dedicated efforts of its working volunteer board, committed members, and community partners, the organization not only survived but emerged stronger, more focused, and more deeply rooted in its mission.
This renewed stability and strengthened leadership have allowed the Chamber to rebuild momentum, expand programming, and reestablish itself as a vital voice for business in New Westminster.
Today, the Chamber continues its legacy by offering:
- Business advocacy at municipal, provincial, and federal levels
- Networking events that bring together diverse sectors
- Resources, education, and professional development
- Community partnerships that strengthen the local economy
- Member benefits like the Chamber Benefits Program, discounts, and more.
“We are honoured to carry forward a tradition that began in 1883,” said Karima Jivraj. “Our recent challenges reminds us that resilience is part of our history. As we look ahead, we remain committed to fostering a vibrant, connected, and strong business community one that reflects the spirit and ingenuity that define New Westminster.”
